Ernie Regalado, the founder of Bizety.com, recently reviewed the landscape for web application security products and the evolution of security techniques to protect Web applications. Before starting Bizety, Ernie worked as a technology analyst and has done consulting in the CDN industry.
Reviewing Akamai, Cloudflare, Incapsula, and tCell
In his report, Ernie looks at the history of application protection and how that has driven the development of products from Imperva, Incapsula, Cloudflare, Akamai, and tCell. Early web application protections were based on security appliances for on-premises application deployments. As applications grew, they were pushed to find scalability in any possible way they could find. Some apps moved to the cloud, and continued along with their early security solutions repackaged as virtual machines. Other apps used content delivery networks (CDNs) to reach users globally. CDNs naturally saw demand for security products integrated into their monthly offerings.
While both VMs and later CDNs helped applications grow to support large user bases, they have had to work hard to adapt to the cloud-first world of applications today. Cloud applications are usually built with agile methods, deployed through a continuous integration and deployment pipeline, and updated frequently by a rich set of DevOps tools. In this new world of application development, deploying security in tandem with the application becomes much more important.
