The opportunity

Rapid7 has a track record of investing in, contributing to, and building on open source. The company first began investing in the open-source community 12 years ago when Rapid7 acquired Metasploit, the world's most used penetration testing framework, and more recently created AttackerKB, a community-driven platform where security professionals can exchange information about vulnerabilities to better understand the impact and likelihood of being exploited. Earlier this year, Rapid7 acquired Velociraptor, a digital forensics and incident response (DFIR) framework introduced a few years ago by an information security specialist in digital forensics, network, and memory forensics along with his fellow community contributors. Under Rapid7 stewardship, the goal is to foster community and grow participation in the Velociraptor ecosystem.

Velociraptor allows for hunting across over a hundred thousand hosts to provide actionable data to security analysts in minutes and unprecedented visibility into the state of endpoints. Rapid7 is seeking a passionate, enthusiastic, and experienced community engagement manager to help grow the Velociraptor community and its open-source project contributions.

The role

As a Community Engagement Manager for the Velociraptor open-source community, you will focus on engaging and supporting the community and advocating for it both internally and externally.  You will be a conduit between the company and the community while creating captivating content, inspiring technical audiences across channels, leading community outreach, and spreading the word about Velociraptor.

In this role you will:

  • Together with the Velociraptor community manager, build out and execute on the community vision to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive community environment for members

  • Design and execute community awareness and engagement strategies in conjunction with the Velociraptor community manager and Rapid7 marketing, fostering a global community through outreach programs

  • Define programs (scope, tactics, goals, schedule, etc.) to drive growth, successfully achieve milestones, manage issues, and mitigate risk

  • Develop customer empathy and an understanding of incident response teams' needs, sourcing new relationships and fostering deeper ties with existing ones

  • Organize virtual and in-person community events (meetups, hackathons, workshops, trainings, etc.) and drive awareness and attendance for the events

  • Evangelize in person and online at scale, telling the Velociraptor story to encourage open-source contributions and use

  • Create engaging content, effectively communicating to both technical and non-technical audiences with ease, including writing blogs and technical content to position Velociraptor as a thought leader among security professionals

  • Take a data-driven approach to community building, including how to measure the health and success of the community and reporting key performance indicators (KPIs), such as social media stats, web traffic analysis, community contributions, and more to stakeholders

  • Provide community feedback to stakeholders

In return, you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing or a related field

  • At least 3-5 years of work experience in marketing, with 1-2 years in community management and development

  • A track record of nurturing and scaling community programs, engaging community members, improving a community experience, and managing through influence

  • Strategic thinking balanced with the ability to execute plans and manage cross-functional projects

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and willingness to develop content, engage in social interactions, and participate in events

  • A strong collaborative mindset, with the ability to collaborate across time zones and cultures

  • Curiosity and a desire to not only learn, but also share what was learned and experienced

  • Good problem-solving skills, sound judgment and knowing when to ask for help

  • Resourcefulness, flexibility and tenacity

  • A proven ability to align teams and stakeholders to a common goal

  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time (post-pandemic)
