The Opportunity

The Vice President of Commercial, Legal will be responsible for designing, leading and facilitating all legal aspects of Rapid7's commercialization and contracting strategy. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will build close partnerships with senior executives and sales leadership to help drive the company's commercial strategy. These include elements of procurement and commercialization, specific transactional matters, and the negotiation of complex agreements with business partners in the enterprise and across complex channel dynamics. You will be instrumental in managing risk in a maturing, global company while driving commercial practices that allow us to realize our growth potential and enabling Rapid7 to carry out its mission to make the best in cybersecurity accessible to all. The Role

  • Lead a talented team of attorneys focused on supporting our commercial contracting needs in close collaboration with sales and other cross-functional partners

  • Develop and drive comprehensive, long-term legal strategies that balance risk and business objectives, creating efficiencies in the customer onboarding, management and vendor procurement processes

  • Articulate a long-term vision for commercialization and contracting reflective of a $1b+ company and partner across the organization to ensure the success of that vision 

  • Build, mentor and develop a team of lawyers; prioritize the team's workload, set goals, with realistic as well as ambitious deadlines to help the team navigate our dynamic business environment across a wide customer base

  • Work in concert with attorneys from our corporate and compliance, privacy, intellectual property, and legal operations teams

  • Help drive Rapid7's Enterprise, Fed/SLED and channel strategy by identifying issues and risks in complex agreement structures, providing dynamic approval processes and an excellent understanding of challenging procurement environments 

  • Identify and evaluate business and legal risks in transactions and processes by finding creative ways to mitigate them while achieving business goals

  • Create and improve agreement templates, training, processes, and other resources with a keen understanding of commercialization in cloud and SaaS markets, and ensure contract terms and conditions are consistent with internal policies and goals

  • Design, implement, launch and operate an enterprise-wide contract management system that optimizes contracting and ancillary processes such as security and privacy approvals, finance and accounting requirements, vendor management and risk mitigation strategies while serving multiple lines-of-business

  • Contribute to the improvement of the Legal department and help provide best in class legal services to the company

Qualifications and Traits

  • J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school (or foreign equivalent)

  • Membership in at least 1 U.S. State Bar, with good standing

  • 12+ years of legal practice, including extensive commercial and transaction counseling experience

  • Experience building and leading diverse teams

  • Extraordinary interpersonal and communication skills; phenomenal ability to communicate information effectively internally and externally, including to non-legal audiences, and to drive cross-functional alignment and action

  • Execution-oriented mindset with the humility, drive, and scrappiness to get things done in a fast-paced environment

  • Robust sense of humor and the desire to have fun while building a sense of camaraderie amongst the team

  • History of supporting large, complex contracts with enterprise customers

  • Experience with technology companies and an ability to grow and lead a commercial legal operation that accelerates the company's growth

  • Promote sustained growth and business scale while empowering go-to-customer efforts with enablement and dynamic assessments of risk

  • Ability to show empathy toward customers with a strong track record of finding solutions that scale

  • Highly attuned to business drivers and competitive dynamics and proven ability to drive large-scale initiatives, engaging a variety of stakeholders, and influencing without direct authority

  • Excellent executive presence and proven stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and proactively nurture relationships with a diverse range of internal and external partners and constituencies including Executive Leadership, Sales, Product, Marketing, People Strategy, Finance, Operations, and Compliance
