Ipswitch IMail IMAP SEARCH Buffer Overflow

Disclosed

Description

This module exploits a stack buffer overflow in Ipswitch IMail Server 2006.1 IMAP SEARCH verb. By sending an overly long string, an attacker can overwrite the buffer and control program execution. In order for this module to be successful, the IMAP user must have at least one message.

Module Options

To display the available options, load the module within the Metasploit console and run the commands 'show options' or 'show advanced':

msf > use exploit/windows/imap/ipswitch_search
msf exploit(ipswitch_search) > show targets
    ...targets...
msf exploit(ipswitch_search) > set TARGET < target-id >
msf exploit(ipswitch_search) > show options
    ...show and set options...
msf exploit(ipswitch_search) > exploit

Time is precious, so I don’t want to do something manually that I can automate. Leveraging the Metasploit Framework when automating any task keeps us from having to re-create the wheel as we can use the existing libraries and focus our efforts where it matters.
