Description

By sending a malformed HTTP request to an IIS 5.1 web service, it is possible to remotely crash the IIS service process (inetinfo.exe) using a web browser.

The vulnerability is only exploitable on directories with the "Scripts & Executables" permission set.

The malicious request is formed the following way:

http://www.example.xom/_vti_bin/.dll/*\%01~0

The * can be any of these ASCII characters: %01-%1f, %3f, ", *, :, <, >

The last \ can also be a /

The last number can be any number from 0 to 9

As of early 2006, Microsoft has not released a patch for this vulnerability.
